Cristy Bird’s Story—An Interview with Project Management and Content Creator of OneEighty Digital

Here at OneEighty Digital we believe we do our best work for you by getting to know you and your organization – your mission, your vision, the reason you do what you do. By knowing you well we understand that we can serve you better.

So in a true spirit of reciprocity, we thought we’d let you get to know us as well. Each of our lives tells a story of who we are and how God has brought us all together.

Here’s Cristy’s story.

Cristy Bird has always been a deep thinker. It is probably what drew her to a high school debate class and then the debate club. And it was these foundational experiences that set Cristy on a course of discovery that would shape the rest of her life. And it didn’t hurt that she met future husband, Josh, in debate class either.

As a young girl, Cristy’s mom introduced her to the bible, but she said she didn’t understand much of it. As a self-described skeptic, she went along with weekly bible studies but didn’t take much of it in. When a high school friend invited her to a small group bible study, Cristy began to see where her understanding of Scripture and the gospel was lacking. The deep biblical discussions that took place in that study fed Cristy’s soul and ignited in her a desire to know God through His word.

“Scripture is about God and not about solving my problems,” she said. “It is about the big picture of God.”

After being baptized in 2007, Cristy said she has been in a “deep dive ever since – trying to know God more.”

After college, a couple of years in the workforce and a couple of children, Cristy wanted to find a way to stay home with her kids but also keep her marketing and web design skills sharp. She told her pastor that she wanted to work in vocational ministry in a way that helps the church and he connected her with Wesley Lewis of OneEighty Digital. Cristy and Wesley had worked together before on a project for her church, Grace Life, so Cristy was thrilled with the prospect of a more permanent work partnership with Wesley at OneEighty Digital.

“My boss is a pastor and that is inspiring to me,” Cristy said of Wesley. “We talk about work and life things, and he is a lovely person. He is a voice in my life that I respect and can bounce things off of.”

Cristy sees her work with OneEighty Digital as a way to help move the gospel forward through the church. “Moving the gospel forward doesn’t necessarily mean standing on a mountain or in a pulpit – sometimes it looks different,” she said. Ultimately for Cristy, it’s all about being part of the body of Christ.

“There’s no greater mission that we are given than to be active in the body and moving the gospel forward,” she said,

As Cristy helps oversee project management and content for OneEighty, she marvels at the privilege she has to help churches live out their gospel stories and advance the Kingdom. She said observing the tenacity of non-profits to be the feet of Jesus continues to inspire her.

Want to know what Cristy’s doing in her free time? We found out!

What kinds of things do you like to do?

Cristy and her family enjoy hiking, visiting Florida’s many beautiful springs and traveling in the mountains. As self-described nerds, they also love all things Star Wars and Marvel. And as all good Floridians do, they love going to Disney. But more often than not, Cristy and Josh can be found immersed in the activity that initially brought them together – debate. “We love talking about deep issues and thinking through the big questions of the day,” Cristy said.

What are you reading right now?

Cristy said she and her husband just finished Animal Farm by George Orwell – “Josh and I like to tackle tough things of the day.” She is also reading In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl’s Journey to Freedom by Yeonmi Park and Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller.

What podcasts have your attention?

“I love [listening to] podcasts – it’s my happy place,” Cristy said. Her favorite is “Relatable with Allie Beth Stuckey” which tackles all the issues of the day from a Christian Reformed perspective. As someone who loves to learn, podcasts provide Cristy with an abundance of learning opportunities.
